Skin Milk: Summer Dawn Talks Beauty

If you missed our Off Duty session with Summer Dawn Miller yesterday, be sure to head there next. But, since you’re here, kick up your feet and stay for a bit, while the stylish, 20-something Jill-of-all-trades talks maintenance and beauty from the inside out in today’s edition of Skin Milk. As a stylist / trained actor / sometimes model, you may be surprised to find that Summer’s routine is more pared down than one might think. Here, she maps out her approach and shares her tried-and-true products of choice, her steps down to the minute, and an ingenious beauty hack using Glossier’s Balm Dotcom that we’ve never thought of — it’s an inviting mix of cool and practical. Another great lesson to be learned from our inspiring interviewees: never judge a book by its cover and never assume anything in the battlefield that is beauty. We’re all just out here doing what we know best.

Tell us a bit about your morning routine:  “I wake up at 8 a.m. I get right into the shower after I dry brush. I’ll make a celery juice and then start my skincare and then makeup and get ready for the day. After, I’ll run out for coffee. That’s all!”

How long does your morning routine typically take you from start to finish?  “I like to give myself two hours at home before I need to leave the house.”

Shower in the morning, at night, or both?  “Both! They are very different showers. I always dry brush and apply an energizing body oil in the morning.”

Tell us a bit about your (AM) skincare routine: “I always ice my face before I do anything. Then I use a witch hazel toner, Universal Serum from Klarskin, maybe a little Hyaluronic Serum from Barbara Sturm if I’m feeling a little dry, then a bit of squalane oil. I let it all soak in for at least five minutes before I apply SPF.”

Tell us a bit about your makeup routine:  “I usually just do my Lilah B. Foundation as concealer where I need it; pimples, around my nose, and mouth. I’ll brush my brows and add mascara. My favorite blush is Glossier Balm Dotcom in Cherry — an off-label use, but it’s the best. I also love the Lip2cheek from RMS in Promise. Chanel Balm on the lips and I’m done.”

Tell us a bit about your haircare:  “I’m not so attached to any shampoo or conditioner right now. Currently I’m using Cuvee Beauty and it’s good! I’m happy. There’s this great deep conditioner I just tried from Rahua. I don’t use many products on my hair. I just apply Virtue Labs Split End Serum all over. It has saved my hair. It’s the only product of it’s kind out there. I’ll use the Amika Straightening Brush if my hair is puffy and frizzy from humidity.”

Tell us a bit about your (PM) skincare routine: “I’ll wipe everything off with Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton round. Then I wash with Glossier Milky Jelly or Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser. Biologique Recherche P50W goes on next. I mist my face after with Evian Water Spray. After 10 or so minutes, I come back and add serums. I do three pumps of Klarskin Universal Serum and then Tata Harper Beautifying Serum.”

Biggest beauty secret / advice? “Ice your face.”

Okay as much as I love y’all at The Bleu.. I’m exhausted by this. I’m also in my 20s and my skincare is as follows: wash my face with Cetaphil as I have been for years. Sunscreen in the morning and Aveeno nightcream before bed. Her routine seems like it takes so much time and energy. To each their own BUT portraying this as normal is a bit odd.

Thank you for the feedback Crosby. We try our best to include a good mix and have a few of our Skin Milk ladies that use quite a bit less: Katie Schecter, Bec Adams, and Nneka Ibeabuchi come to mind.

I agree. Interesting to see what products people use but oh my god, the icing, the dry brushing, the 2 showers a day. It’s so much.

Would love to see a guide to Nashville & any insight on fashion/creative opportunities there as I am considering moving there but am having a hard time finding things online! I know some of you guys live there and seem to love it so would love some insight!
