Skin Milk: Katie Caplener’s 30-Minute Approach To Beauty

What’s a wavy-haired, Barton Springs-swimming, Texas heat-bearing, boss lady to do when it comes to beauty? We were seriously curious, too. So, we asked the 20-something Founder and Designer behind Vada Jewelry, Katie Caplener, to fill us in. Lucky for us, she just so happens to know a thing or two about curls, daily dips, and a sky-high heat index. She’s already dished on all things jewels, business, and feline friends in yesterday’s Off Duty, but now she’s back to shine a light on a day in her life — beauty edition. Read on to learn what products are stashed on her bathroom shelves, the healthy habits she’s found to help clear her skin, and the morning routine that gets her ready and out the door in under thirty.

Tell us a bit about your morning routine:  “Splash cold water on my face first thing, spritz with Elemental Mineral Mist toner, Vitamin C serum, SPF50, done.”

How long does your morning routine typically take you from start to finish?  “Half hour.”

Shower in the morning, at night, or both?  “In the summer, I have to shower before I get into bed. It’s too humid in Texas to get in bed without showering. If I have meetings or something other than studio work, I shower in the morning as well.”

Tell us a bit about your makeup routine:  “If I’m feeling fun, I wear this special edition, green YSL mascara, electric blue eyeliner, and bright red Rodin lipstick from 4510/SIX. But, my daily makeup is tinted SPF, boy brow, and concealer if my skin is acting up. I stopped wearing daily foundation, mascara, eyeliner, blush, and bronzer about five years ago. ”

Tell us a bit about your haircare:  “My hair is crazy. I never brush it. I used to straighten the shit out of it, and I apologize to my curls everyday for that sad time. I run rose oil through it and dunk it in the natural spring water at least once a week. I have a complete meltdown every time I get a haircut, so I decided to just stop cutting it. Currently trying to grow it down to my butt, stay tuned.”

Tell us a bit about your body / beauty from the inside / wellness routine:  “I have recently started a pilates routine that not only helps my mental state, but makes my ass look cool too. I try to not eat dairy. It’s the devil to my acne-prone skin, but damn I love cheese more than anything else.”

Tell us a bit about your (PM) skincare routine:  “Cream cleanser, toner, retinol, and lots of moisturizer. Exfoliate one to two times a week.”

Biggest beauty secret / advice? “Sleep.”
