A Skin Milk Session: Ruby Stewart Talks Beauty & Self-Care

For 30-something Ruby Stewart, beauty comes in all different forms and practices, and a big one of those is self-care. Of course, she has a typical product-filled regimen, but what truly keeps Ruby looking and feeling her best are the things she does to keep her mind, body, and soul healthy. From an omega filled diet and keeping active day in and day out to practicing gratitude and meditation, this is one Skin Milk you don’t want to miss. Good habits and good skincare will take you far, even when faced with a busy touring musician lifestyle — and this one clocks in just under an hour.

Tell us a bit about your morning routine:  “I like to wake up, take my dogs out, and have a coffee. Then, I will wash my face, brush my teeth, and moisturize. I’ll work out for an hour, then shower and get ready for the day.”

How long does your morning routine typically take you from start to finish?  “To shower, do makeup, and get dressed usually takes me a little under an hour.”

Shower in the morning, at night, or both?  “I take showers after I work out in the morning and baths at night to relax.”

Tell us a bit about your (AM) skincare routine:  “I wash my face with Lancer cleanser for sensitive skin. Then, I put on my Augustinus Bader moisturizer. I roll out my face with my chilled face-rollers and apply makeup if needed.”

Tell us a bit about your makeup routine:  “Stage makeup is pretty heavy, so when I get a day off I will give my skin a break and just moisturize. I have very sensitive skin, so my favorite foundation, powder, and bronzer is Laura Mercier. Eyes to Kill mascara by Armani, Boy Brow by Glossier, and Clary lip balm.”

Tell us a bit about your haircare:  “I try not to dye my hair too much. When my hair seems dry, I will sleep with avocado oil in it for a night. I use Kérastase shampoo and conditioner.”

Tell us a bit about your body / beauty from the inside / wellness:  “I don’t eat red meat. I eat a lot of fish, particularly salmon, and avocados. My hair and nails grow really quickly, and I think this is why. I drink lots of water and am cutting down on my coffee / wine intake. Avocado oil for skin and hair is my favorite thing.”

Tell us a bit about your (PM) skincare routine:  “I usually do my Eve Lom mask or Aesop mask at night, depending on the state of my skin. If I have just returned from traveling, I will usually do the Eve Lom moisturizing mask, but if my skin has been congested or oily, I will do the Aesop mask. After that, I use my Rich Augustinus Bader Cream and use a little Smith’s rosebud salve for lips and under my eyes. It’s a simple solution for crows feet, better than any other cream I’ve used.”

Biggest beauty secret / advice?  “Gratitude, meditation, water, omegas, avocado oil, and sunscreen.”
