Skin Milk: Jen Gotch’s Beauty 4-1-1

Are you sensing a pattern here? If you’ve been following along since our launch last week (figurative birth, if you will), you’ll have likely seen the words “skin milk” make an appearance in various stories across the site (hello, Nneka and Reese!) And, you may be asking yourself: just WTF is skin milk? Valid question. Skin Milk was actually born from a deep love for all things beauty (our founder’s obsession with skincare, in particular) and a desire to create a community where products are discussed and dissected honestly, while swapping tips and tricks, and exploring what defines beauty from person to person. It’s our routine and review-based column for beauty enthusiasts everywhere, no matter how many passes of the mascara wand you may make, and a place to “spill the milk” on your favorite (and, perhaps, least favorite) beauty and skincare products. We have a lot in-store for this baby column of ours, so be sure to subscribe to be the first to know about its up-coming growth spurt in our sign-up box on the right!

So, what does the 40-something, badass behind everyone’s favorite fun brand Ban.do, soon-to-be author, and wickedly successful podcast host do to stay fresh as a daisy on the reg? Lucky for us (and you), Jen Gotch — who’s been known to get real about the things so many more people should feel comfortable getting real about (think: anxiety, depression, and feeling human things) — is spilling the milk on her regimen and the products she knows and swears by. Cheers!

Tell us a bit about your morning routine:  “I wake up (obviously), then make a Bulletproof coffee. Take my meds and vitamins. Brush teeth. Wash, exfoliate, and moisturize my face, and head out the door to exercise.”

Tell us a bit about your skincare:  “I developed adult acne, so I’ve toned down my skincare to just the Naturopathica Cleanser and Facial Polish, a gentle toner and moisturizer, and a mask once or twice a week. If I really want to take care of my skin, I skip sugar and wine, but that is tough for obvious reasons.”

Tell us a bit about your makeup:  “Day to day I don’t wear a lot of makeup. I’ll use the Mary Kay Brow Gel, Benefit Roller Lash Mascara, Benetint (also by Benefit) for lips and cheeks, and then Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in copper.”

Tell us a bit about your haircare:  “I wash my hair once a week and use a lot of dry shampoo in between.”

Tell us a bit about your body/beauty from the inside/wellness:  “Sleep, stress relief, energy healing, acupuncture, and finding joy — that’s my method.”

Signature scent?  “Probably a combination of coconut and dry shampoo, but I also love Winter by Dasein.”

Tell us a bit about your nightly routine:  “If I’m lucky, it’s the same as the morning routine. That is, if I don’t fall asleep on the couch watching Seinfeld.”

Biggest beauty secret or piece of advice?  “My skin looks best when I get the right amount of sleep, the right amount of water, and very little sugar. But, that rarely comes together.”
